Professional internship
The Professional Internship consists of a period of Experimental Professional Experience in the profession's own acts, Training in Statute and Deontology and Professional Training and lasts for 12 months.
Enrollment through the Professional Internship is intended to:
1. Holders of qualifying training in the field of architecture, recognized under Portuguese law.
2. Qualifying training in the field of architecture is considered to be:
- Training in Portugal
a) Integrated Masters in Architecture, in accordance with what is described in the EOA, article 5, paragraph 2, subparagraph b);
b) Degree or equivalent diploma in the field of architecture, in accordance with what is described in the EOA, article 5, paragraph 2, subparagraph a).
- Training abroad
c) Degrees of academic training in architecture within one of the following cases:
That are covered by the automatic recognition of the EU Directive;
Who benefit from the application of the general regime for the recognition of training and professional experience, as provided for in Law No. 9/2009, of March 4 and subsequent amendments;
Obtain equivalence of the academic title under the terms of the legislation in force.
Professional experience
1. The experimental professional experience foreseen in the internship is developed in Host Entities framed in the practice of the profession's own acts defined in paragraphs 2 and 3 of article 44 of the EOA and is supervised by a Supervisor.
2. The period of experimental professional experience lasts for 12 months, and can be carried out in a minimum period of 4 months in different entities and must be completed within a maximum period of 24 months.
3. The counting of the period of professional internship at the Order begins from the date of validation by the CDR or by the date indicated by the latter, provided that it is after validation.
4. The Supervisor must be an effective member of the Order registered for at least 5 years and in full exercise of his rights, not being able to accompany more than 3 interns simultaneously.
Training in Statutes and Ethics and Professional Training:
In accordance with the Registration and Internship Regulations, all intern members must attend training in Statute and Ethics and Professional Training , under the terms described in articles 3 and 4 of Annex I, and in accordance with the provisions of the 33rd plenary meeting of the CDN on May 3, 2016.
Training in Statutes and Ethics (8h)
Training in Statutes and Ethics is mandatory.
- The 8 hours of training in Statutes and Ethics are not included in the 21 hours of mandatory professional training;
- The registration fee for the Training in Statutes and Deontology is included in the Internship Registration Fee.
Professional Training (minimum 21h)
During the internship you must carry out at least 21 hours of professional training in the areas 581 - Architecture and Urbanism and 582 - Civil Construction and Civil Engineering.
- The 21 hours must include, obligatorily, training in both areas;
- The corresponding training area is mentioned in the presentation of each training course (581 or 582). The lack of this information means that the course can be taken, but is not considered as professional training within the scope of the admission process to the Association of Architects.
Registration for training must be done through your personal area on the Architects Portal.
In all training courses, the trainee member must be successful.

To apply for a Professional Internship, you must register as a candidate and fill in the online forms:

Professional internship certificate issued by the competent authority of the Member State EU (if applicable)
Payment of €200 relating to the Candidacy Fee, in accordance with article 9 (Fees) of the Enrollment and Internship Regulation (RIE). After validation, the number of Extraordinary Intern Member will be assigned and you will be able, in a reserved area, to submit specific requests and complete the internship. The information provided does not exempt you from consulting the EOA and its own Regulations.
Formalization of completion of Internship (RIE Annex I, article 5):
In order to formalize the completion of the professional internship, you must submit the Application Booklet recording activities and acts carried out during the period of the professional internship and must be validated by the Advisor.

Payment of 95 € relative to the registration fee as an Active Member.
Acceptance of the Application Booklet implies validation by the respective CDR within 30 days. Interns with completed professional internship must be enrolled by the CDN within a maximum period of 30 days after the date of validation of the Application Booklet.
Establishment of Professionals from Other States
The recognition of the professional qualifications of a national of a Member State of the European Union (EU) or the European Economic Area (EEA) obtained outside Portugal, for registration as a member of the Order of Architects, is governed by Law no. 9/2009 of 4 March, which transposes Directive 2005/36/EC of the European Parliament and of the Council of 7 September into domestic law.
Nationals of another Member State may register as full members of the Order where they hold qualifying training recognised under Portuguese legislation or subject to automatic recognition under Annex V.7-5.7.1 of Directive 2005/36/EC:
a) By submitting proof of registration/enrolment as an architect issued by the competent authority, in cases where the profession is regulated in the Member State of origin;
b) By proving that they have practised the profession for at least 2 years during the previous 10 years, in cases where neither the profession nor the training leading to it is regulated in the Member State of origin.
Nationals of a Third State, not belonging to the European Economic Area (EEA), with qualifying training obtained in the State of origin or in another Third State, may register as full members of the Order:
a) Under and in accordance with any reciprocity agreement, where applicable, provided that they are legally established as professional architects in the State of origin;
b) By recognition of their qualifying training by a Portuguese higher education institution, in accordance with the law, and completion of a Professional Internship as set out in the Registration and Internship Regulation.
Formal submission of the application for full membership (Annex II of the Registration and Internship Regulation):
In order to formalise registration as a full member, the professional legally established in another State, with qualifying training recognised in Portugal, must first register on the Architects' Portal as a “Candidate” and then access their personal area, where they must complete the Establishment Form for Professionals from Other States, available online, and upload and submit:
- Passport-style photograph (jpeg/jpg);
- Copy of identification document;
- Academic qualification in the field of architecture obtained in the country of origin;
- Recognition of the qualifying training by a Portuguese higher education institution, in accordance with the law, as provided for in Article 2 of the Registration and Internship Regulation, in cases not covered by automatic recognition;
- Proof of residence in Portugal;
- Proof of registration/enrolment as an architect issued by the competent authority of the country of origin (where applicable);
- Proof that the profession has been practised for at least 2 years during the previous 10 years (where applicable).
Payment of the amounts of €50 + €450 relating respectively to the administrative fees for assessment of the application and registration, in accordance with the Fees and Charges Table in force.
Acceptance of the establishment request implies validation by the National Directing Council within 30 days.
Freedom to Provide Services
The recognition of the professional qualifications of a national of a Member State of the European Union (EU) or the European Economic Area (EEA) obtained outside Portugal, for the practice of the profession of architect under the Freedom to Provide Services regime, is governed by Law no. 9/2009 of 4 March, which transposes Directive 2005/36/EC of the European Parliament and of the Council of 7 September into domestic law.
Nationals of another Member State of the European Union (EU) or the European Economic Area (EEA), legally established in the country of origin, with qualifying training recognised under Portuguese legislation or subject to automatic recognition under Annex V.7-5.7.1 of Directive 2005/36/EC, may practise the profession of architect under the Freedom to Provide Services regime:
a) By submitting proof of registration/enrolment as an architect issued by the competent authority, in cases where the profession is regulated in the Member State of origin;
b) By proving that they have practised the profession for at least 2 years during the previous 10 years, in cases where neither the profession nor the training leading to it is regulated in the Member State of origin.
Formal registration for Freedom to Provide Services (Annex II of the Registration and Internship Regulation):
In order to formalise the application to provide services, the professional legally established in another Member State must complete the prior declaration before the service provider’s movement , attaching the following documents:
- Copy of identification document or proof of nationality;
- Academic qualification subject to automatic recognition;
- Recognition of the qualifying training by a Portuguese higher education institution, in accordance with the law, as provided for in Article 2 of the Registration and Internship Regulation, in cases not covered by automatic recognition;
- Proof of registration/enrolment as an architect issued by the competent authority of the country of origin (where applicable);
- Proof that the profession has been practised for at least 2 years during the previous 10 years (where applicable).
The documentation must be sent to the Order of Architects.
Payment of the amount of €60 relating to the administrative fee for issuing the certificate of professional qualification, valid for one year, in accordance with the Fees and Charges Table in force.
Acceptance of the Freedom to Provide Services request implies validation by the National Directing Council within 30 days.
